“John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.”
Old Man’s War, published in 2005, is the first installment to a great science fiction series containing six books written by John Scalzi. This story follows John Perry, recently turned seventy-five, and ready to become a CDF soldier. Only accepting senior citizens, the Colonial Defense Forces has an unbeatable offer- the chance to be young again. Naturally, the CDF gets thousands of enlistees per year with this offer, John Perry included. The CDF, a space-based military, is tasked with protecting human colonists across space as they fight other species for possession of habitable planets.
John Perry goes on to become a specialized CDF soldier with his new genetically engineered body, looking as he did when he was twenty, gaining capabilities beyond those of an average human, and becoming stronger than he ever had been. John Perry goes on to gain experience as a soldier, proving invaluable on many missions, engaging against alien species across the galaxy.
